Stockholm's Moderna Museet comes to Bonn

The Great Collections IV

The Kunst- und Ausstellungshalle continues its series The Great Collections with the Moderna Museet. The exhibition offers an insight into the outstanding collection of one of the most eminent museums of modern art, which was founded as a separate institution in the 1950s.

It is the concentration of works from nascent and transitional phases of this century's various art movements which lends the collection of Moderna Museet its unmistakable character. Approx. 250 of the best works will be displayed in the Great Hall and the two adjacent galleries on the ground floor of the Kunst- und Ausstellungshalle. They form the core of this exhibition and provide an account of the international development of art in the 20th century which is contrasted with Swedish art from the same period. A special exhibition in the Central Cabinet from 4 July to 28 August 1996 provides an insight into the collection of more than 100,000 photographs in the Fotografiska Museet, a section of Moderna Museet.

In the University Library Bonn, an accompanying exhibition will take place from July 4 through October 1996. Catalogues, posters, photos and artists' letters give insight into the most important moments in the biography of Pontus Hulten, founding director of Moderna Museet and until the end of 1995 artistic director of the Kunst- und Ausstellungshalle.

Catalogue: The catalogue comprises approx. 350 pages with 100 color illustrations. Essays by all former directors of Moderna Museet as well as detailed comments by Nina Öhman Linde and quotations on the most important exhibits offer an extensive insight into the museum's collection. An illustrated chronology of exhibitions mounted by Moderna Museet and a checklist of the exhibition complete the volume. The catalogue is published in German. Price DM 68.

During the exhibition a comprehensive accompanying program will take place.
