| Accompanying program |
Since its inception, the Moderna Museet has devoted itself
intensively to contemporary culture in a much broader sense than museums
generally do. In the past four decades, Stockholm has played host to the
avant-garde of the international art and cultural scene. The special friends
of the Moderna Museet include Karlheinz Stockhausen and Mauricio Kagel,
who have given numerous concerts there. Kagel and Stockhausen will also
present their works on two concert evenings as part of the accompanying
programme to this exhibition. The evening Erratum Musical is dedicated to
an almost completely unknown side of Marcel Duchamp's work, his musical
experiments from the years 1912-1915. Artists' films from the Moderna Museet's
extensive film archives will be shown on three long film nights. The focal
points are early experimental cinema, American films of the 1960s and Swedish
experimental films. Friday, 5 July, 8 p.m. Forum Erratum Musical A long evening with music by Marcel Duchamp The S.E.M. Ensemble, New York, will play Erratum Musical, La Mariée mise à nu par ses célibataires même, Sculpture Musical. With a short introduction by Herbert Molderings on music in Duchamp's work, a slide lecture by Petr Kotik on Duchamp's composition technique, with Marcel Carné's film Entr'acte and Robert Graff's documentary film A Conversation with Marcel Duchamp, with chess games inter alia. Sunday, 15 September, 8 p.m. Forum Die Stücke der Windrose (The points of the compass) By Mauricio Kagel The Musikfabrik Nordrhein-Westfalen will play the cycle Die Stücke der Windrose which was composed in the years 1988-1994. Each of the eight parts is a musical representation of a different compass point, taking the "unfamiliar" as their subject. "If one feels transported after just a few bars of music to the intended geographical location, then we as listeners may be able to enrich the atmosphere of the piece with fragments of our own musical memories or experiences." (Mauricio Kagel) The composer will be present. Friday, 15 November, 8 p.m. Forum Libra For bass clarinet and electronic music Kathinkas Gesang als Luzifers Requiem (Kathinka's song as Lucifer's requiem) For flute and electronic music By Karlheinz Stockhausen The two works presented here are continuations of Kontakte (1958-1960), in which live instruments are combined with recorded electronic music to form a new unity. The first performance abroad - after the world première in Cologne - was at the Moderna Museet Stockholm in 1960. With Karlheinz Stockhausen, Suzanne Stephens (bass clarinet) and Kathinka Pasveer (flute). The dates for the three planned film nights will be announced in the July/August programme of events of the Kunst- und Ausstellungshalle. Educational program In addition to the regular free guided tours, special tours for children will be offered at 11.30 a.m. on Sundays from 1.9. - 1.12.1996. This is in keeping with the exemplary educational work which has characterised the extremely lively style of the Moderna Museet since its inception.
