31 January - 6 April 1997 OUT OF THE BLUE Renzo Piano Building Workshop An exhibition of the Renzo Piano Building Workshop in collaboration with the Kunst- und Ausstellungshalle der Bundesrepublik Deutschland. Certainly since the construction of the Centre Pompidou (1971-1978), if not before, Renzo Piano has numbered among the world's foremost contemporary architects. His current projects, whether for the new design of Potsdamer Platz in Berlin, the building of a cultural centre in Noumea (New Caledonia), or for Kansai airport in the Japanese city Osaka, are attracting global attention. He continues to forge new trends by combining traditional and modern building materials through the use of advanced computer technology. At the same time, his structures preserve a close relationship with nature by incorporating plants and natural light into the design. In creating a casual link between the traditional and the modern, between organic and highly abstract forms, they offer a promising metaphor for the balance between nature and technology. Unlike many of his colleagues, Renzo Piano does not strive for an easily recognisable stylistic vocabulary; he is not imprisoned in the "gilded cage of style" but committed to fulfilling functional and human requirements. This exhibition is based on the same perceptions: Renzo Piano's designs are not conceived in secluded isolation but through an intensive exchange of ideas among all the parties concerned. It is no coincidence that he calls his office a "Building Workshop". The visitor of the exhibition is actively involved in this process of seeking ideas and designs. A catalogue book, consisting of approximately 208 pages and numerous illustrations, will be published to accompany the exhibition. It is expected to retail at around 28,- DM. There will also be a CD-ROM especially produced for this exhibition, giving detailed insight into the projects displayed in the exhibition and containing some hitherto unpublished design plans. Its well-structured and easily comprehensible approach will also enable users to take a closer look at some of the basic problems involved in architecture. As the exhibition, it is aimed at both the interested public and specialists. Visit the exhibition right
