Charles
Lindbergh's Last Dream
Images from the event The images from H.J.Hack The Kunst- und Ausstellungshalle (Arts and Exhibition Hall of the Federal Republic of Germany) has invited German media artist Hermann Josef Hack to perform "CHARLES LINDBERGH'S LAST DREAM", an internet-happening, joining Los Angeles Convention Center on the occasion of SIGGRAPH'97 and the German audience via new media on Wednesday, August 6, from 10am to 12am US West Coast time The idea of Hack's event is to show that thanks to multimedia technology, works of art can be transported in the moment of their production via internet to a far away location where they get plotted and fixed, so that an exhibition can be shown moments after the process of production (which is to be witnessed by the audience abroad) overseas. In memory of Charles A. Lindbergh, the man who made the first non-stop flight across the Atlantic Ocean, Hack who is supported in Bonn by his friend Denis Giffeler, will cross the Atlantic Ocean again: "I want to find out, what happens if people take part in the process of creating a work of art over a long distance. Before the paint in Los Angeles will be dry, the pictures will be printed in Bonn." Hack is sure that new media in combination with networking is a chance for a better communication not only for business and education but also for culture and arts. So he wants to pave the way for a new form of art communication. The artist: "Using new media for arts messages to participate in actual contexts should become natural. The use of multimedia must no longer be a privilege of those who want to strengthen their influence at the expense of the whole society, but must be accessible for all equally. It is one of the tasks of today's art to pave this way. Charles Lindbergh's Last Dream is one step to this destination."
