Objectives

Since the 80’s, the cultural and economic importance of music and sound design within the media landscape is constantly increasing, which not only refers to film but also to television, video and multimedia. This dynamic development includes the fields of production, distribution and reception equally. It changes job profiles as well as, for example, the copyright law. Therefore, it is necessary to understand the vitality of this development, to make creative use of it and to support appropriate achievements. For this the International Filmmusic Biennial, founded on the occasion of the hundredth anniversary of film in 1995, provides an international forum. The International Prize for Film and Media Music in particular is an indicator for the future and it is unique throughout the world with its international arrangement of the Endowed, the Honorary and the Main Prize.

Kuratorium (Board of Institutions)

The International Filmmusic Biennial was established in 1995 by the Art and Exhibition Hall of the Federal Republic of Germany and is since 1999 being organized in cooperation with the Filmstiftung Nordrhein-Westfalen. A board of film, music and other culturel institutions supervises the contents of the initiative and manages the development of the event. Members of the board of institutions are, next to the two organizing institutions, Deutsche Phono-Akademie e.V., Deutscher Kinemathek Verbund, the German and the European Music Council, Franz Grothe-Stiftung, GEMA-Stiftung and the Goethe-Institut Inter Nationes.

Range of Events

The main part of the program consists of the competition for the International Prize for Film Media Music Meetings of different lines of business provide opportunities for representatives of the film and phono industry, to discuss improvements of cooperation. In round table talks apprenticeship and training opportunities within the line of music and film business are discussed. Workshops and work presentations will impart knowlege about the audio-visual production to the participants. Concerts of the prizewinners and artists who are distinguished by their achievements in film music will be an excellent offer to the public.

International Prize for Film- and Media Music 2002

Every two years, at least two international main prizes will be awarded for works of international status from the area of (full-length) feature films. A future addition of prize categories is planned. The main prizes will be selected by an international jury from the productions of the two previous years. Generally, at least one honorary prize will be selected and awarded by the board of institutions for the outstanding achievements of an artist's time achievement.
Furthermore, two endowed cash prizes one European and one German will also be awarded. A European and a German jury will select the winner of the endowed prizes on the basis of submissions.
The European Endowed Prize is supported by an European network.




Furthermore the European Endowed Prize organized by the German GEMA-Foundation, the French SACEM , the Austrian AKM and the Swiss Fondation SUISA, will be awarded to a young European composer. A European jury will select the winner of this endowed prize on the basis of submissions.
In addition, the Endowed Prize of the Franz Grothe Foundation will be awarded to a young German composer. A German jury will select the winner of the Endowed Prize of the Franz Grothe Foundation on the basis of submissions.

The objective of the European Endowed Prize, which will be awarded within the framework of the International Prize for Film and Media Music, is to support upcoming talents on their career path. This is why the European Endowed Prize intends to guarantee extremely good working conditions and professional advancement for the next production the award holder will be part of. The Europeen Endowed Prize is directed to students at film schools and conservatories all over Europe.

European Film Institute Karlsruhe (EIKK) Support Prize 

The goal of the
European Film Institute Karlsruhe (EIKK) Support Prize as awarded in the framework of the International Prize for Film and Media Music is to support the professional advancement of up-and-coming artists in the areas of film composition and filmsound design such as have already demonstrated their abilities by means of an outstanding piece of work. Erich-Wolfgang-Korngold Prize 2002
