I. Objectives

Since the 80’s, the cultural and economic importance of music and sound design within the media landscape is constantly increasing, which not only refers to film but also to television, video and multimedia. This dynamic development includes the fields of production, distribution and reception equally. It changes job profiles as well as, for example, the copyright law. Therefore, it is necessary to understand the vitality of this development, to make creative use of it and to support appropriate achievements. For this the International Filmmusic Biennial, founded on the occasion of the hundredth anniversary of film in 1995, provides an international forum. The International Prize for Film and Media Music in particular is an indicator for the future and unique throughout the world with its international arrangement of the Endowed, the Honorary and the Main Prize.

II. Kuratorium (Board of Institutions)

The International Filmmusic Biennial was established in 1995 by the Kunst- und Ausstellungshalle der Bundesrepublik Deutschland and is since 1999 being organized together with the Filmstiftung Nordrhein-Westfalen jointly. A board of film, music and other culturel institutions supervises the contents of the initiative and manages the development of the event. Members of the board of institutions are, next to the two organizing institutions., Deutscher Kinemathek Verbund, the German and the European Music Council, Deutsche Phono-Akademie e.V., Franz Grothe-Stiftung, GEMA-Stiftung and the Goethe-Institute e.V.

III. Criteria for the Awards

1. The prize is awarded on the basis of a competition which is international in nature, i.e. not subject to national limitations. Achievements that have already won prizes at other events are also eligible.

2. The prize will be awarded for the outstanding compositional quality of film music or an exceptional achievement in the domain of sound design (integrated design for the soundtrack) and/or for the dramatically logical and intelligent use of sound and music in the context of the images in question. When reaching its decision, the jury will also bear the respective cultural context of the film in mind.

3. As a rule, two awards are made. Prizes are given for an overall achievement as well as individual achievements, and especially innovative achievements. The prizes are bestowed on the composers and/or the persons responsible for the sound design.

4. The awards ceremony will be on June 28, 2002 in the framework of a gala event at the Kunst- und Ausstellungshalle der Bundesrepublik Deutschland.

1. Two independent bodies, selection committee and international jury, will be convened by the organizers to assess the entries and reach a decision on the winners.
