International Prize for Film and Media Music

The prize, consisting of honorary awards and endowed prizes as well as a competition about the best international recent feature film music is intended to draw attention to the growing significance of music and sound design in the audiovisual media. It will endeavor to show recent trends, pay tribute to exemplary achievements and foster new talents. The International Prize for Film and Media Music in particular is an indicator for the future and is unique throughout the world with its international arrangement of the Endowed, the Honorary and the Main Prize (for the best international recent feature film music).

Kuratorium (Board of Institutions)

The International Filmmusic Biennial was established in 1995 by the Art and Exhibition Hall of the Federal Republic of Germany and is since 1999 being organized together with the Filmstiftung Nordrhein-Westfalen jointly. A board of film, music and other cultural institutions supervises the contents of the initiative and manages the development of the event. Members of the board of institutions are, next to the two organizing institutions, Deutsche Phono-Akademie e.V., Deutscher Kinemathek Verbund, Deutscher and European Music Council, Franz Grothe-Stiftung, GEMA-Stiftung and the Goethe-Institute e.V.


European Endowed Prize

The objective of the European Endowed Prize, which will be awarded within the framework of the International Prize for Film and Media Music, is to support upcoming talents on their career path. This is why the European Endowed Prize intend to guarantee extremelygood musical working conditions and professional advancement for the next production the award holder will be part of. The Europeen Endowed Prize is directed to students at film highschools and conservatories all over Europe.
The basic element to paticipate in the competition of the European Endowed Prize is a VHS-video with three short films (documentary-, experimental- and feature film / length of each film isapproximately 10 to 15 min.). The applicants may order this VHS-video for a fee of approximately 10 Euro at the Office of the International Film Music Biennial. They are asked to produce a music layout to one of these films. A jury will judge on all works submitted. The best layout will be transposed into the film and presented as the music to the film at the International Film Music Biennial.

The recording or performance of the winning composition should be made by musicians in Bonn. The score should go with the usual parts of a symphony orchestra or of popmusic. We reserve the right to replace an unusual instrument with a synthesizer.


Awarding the European Endowed Prize

I. Application conditions

1. Admitted are students at film highschools and conservatories or comparable institutions within Europe.

2. Interested students have to register at the Office of the International Prize for Film and Media Music (see address below). Registration has to be made in writing and should contain information about the applicant's school, his subject of study and his address of correspondance. The application letter has to be added with an crossed cheque (10 Euro; see above I.3.).

3. For a fee of about 10 Euro the applicant will receive a VHS-video with the three short films - the documentary-, the experimental- and the feature film - via mail to the address mentioned.

4. The contribution to the competition shall be a musical layout (imaginations of the picture/image- and sound-dramaturgy, of the musical structure, not for a full orchestra but for a small ensemble up to 6 persons) which has to be created for one of the three offered short films (see above I.3.) on the VHS-video. The applicant is asked to possibly add some examples for the musical realization to the musical layout.

5. Submission should be made to the Office of the International Prize for Film and Media Music in Bonn. Works should reach the office until April 16th, 2002,completed with the documentation on the originator of the filmmusic:

- biography incl. photograph as well as complete list of earlier productions stating the participantsin the production
- layout
- examples for the musical realization on audiocassette, CD or video

6. The winner will be informed immediately and has to complete his layout ready for performance until May 31st 2002.

Works submitted will be viewed by a pre-select committee to ensure they conform with the entry requirements.


II. Judging

1. The Prize's Board of Trustees will appoint a European jury and nominate the prize-winner from the pre-select list. The jury shall consist of a maximum of five persons from all over Europe.

2. The jury members work on a voluntary basis and are appointed on account of their professional or expert abilities.

3. Within the framework of the overall aims and tasks of the International Prize for Film and Media Music, the jury is absolutely free in its decision about the prize winner. The jury shall endeavor to reach unanimous decision on the prize; a prize will only be awarded if the production is voted for by at least two thirds of the votes.

4. The jury will judge the quality of the submitted layouts and the musical examples.

5. No legal objections can be raised to the jury's decision.

6. The award holder will be informed about the decision of the jury until the middle of May 2002. From this moment on he will have the possibility to realize the proposed layout which will be presented to the public within the framework of the International Filmmusic Biennial 2002 (June 23 - June 30, 2002) after prior consultation with the Office of the International Prize for Film and Media Music.


III. Presentation of Awards

1. The prize-giving ceremony will be held on June 28, 2002 within the framework of a gala evening at the Art and Exhibition Hall of the Federal Republic of Germany. The selected winner of endowed prize will be informed until the middle of May 2002. They have to present the realization of their awarded layout within the framework of the International Filmmusic Biennial and must take receipt of the prize in person on June 29 in Bonn.

2. The jury shall award the prizes on the basis of specific regulations intended to ensure appropriate use of the prize monies. The Office of the International Prize for Film and Media Music will monitor the use of the prize monies in accordance with these rules.

3. The European Endowed Prizes consist of money prizes in the amount of 12.500 € made available by the GEMA-Foundation, Germany, the SACEM, France, the AKM, Austria and the Fondation SUISA, Swiss and is intended to promote new artistic talents in the areas of film music.

4. The money provided for the endowed prizes shall be used by the prize-winners for the purposes for which they have been earmarked, namely for a new film production. The prize-winner can contact a producer of his/her choice and use the money as partial financing of the film music she/he was commissioned to create by the producer for a particular production.

5. The producer must, for his part, put in an appropriate portion of the money required for the production of the film music, at least 50 percent of and in addition to the prize money. He is obliged to provide proof in advance that the entire financing of the film music for the production is guaranteed on this basis. In this context, a sum of at least one quarter of the entire sum budgeted for the film music production shall be used as remuneration for the composer. The remaining sum shall be used for the production of the music, for example for orchestra work or studio expenses.

6. The money for the endowed prize is available at the Office of the International Prize for Film and Media Music ready on call and can be withdrawn as soon as documentation on production planning and budgeting has been submitted.

7. The producer is obliged to furnish/provide the Office of the International Prize for Film and Media Music with proof that all financial means have been used in correspondance with the original plans after the end of production work.


IV. Creditline and information

The awarded film shall contain suitable information in its leader and trailer indicating that the film music was promoted by the International Prize for Film and Media Music / European Endowed Prize, organized by the German GEMA-Foundation, French SACEM, Austrian AKM and Swiss Fondation SUISA of the relevant year. The production company is obliged to provide the prize organiers with information about the presentation and promotion of the feature film, and eventually coordinates the presentation and promotion with the prize organizers.
